NEW STRAIN 101
It won’t be wrong if somebody tagged 2020 as a year of CORONA. By the end of the year it seemed like things are coming back to normal, and out of a blue came the news that a new strain of novel coronavirus was discovered somewhere in the UK.
WHAT IS NEW STRAIN?
Every time a living organism reproduces, the offsprings are born and essential genetic information is transferred via DNA which comes with certain changes. A kind of genetic mutation which in most cases is beneficial to their next generation. For example, the white polar bear has a higher no. of successful hunting and a greater chance of survival due to their mutated pigmentation resulting in their white color helping them to camouflage better in snow, compared to their brown ancestor bears which migrated to Antarctica before them.
Similarly, in viruses, the rate of multiplication is very high and thus the obvious rapid change. Here in Covid 19, the change occurred in the protein of the virus outer shell resulting in it being stronger and substantially immune to external factors and we got the “New Strain”.
MAJOR CONCERN
Apparently, the new strain is observed to be more contagious compared to its predecessor, and children under 15 and elderly people might face a greater risk of getting infected if not taken precaution.
