All about Sickle Cell
Thalassemia and sickle cell are single-cell hereditary haemoglobin disorders and are major causes of genetic morbidity. Although preventable but in their severe forms can prove life impairing and fatal. Families along with state resources take a heavy financial toll by these hemoglobinopathies.
Looking at the statistics provided by the National Health Mission, 7% of the total population of the world carries an abnormal gene and around 5,00,000 children are born with clinically significant haemoglobin disorder. About 67,000 betathalassemia-affected patients are present in India alone out of which 10,000 are children accounting for nearly 10% of thalassemia major patients worldwide.
In India, approximately 30 million people are silent carriers of β thalassemia unaware and living a normal life but marriage between two such carriers leads to an offspring with the grave ailment.
As only a handful of patients can be cured by bone marrow transplantation from an HLA identical donor, prevention of birth itself of such child apparently is the most prospective and cost-competitive solution achievable by mass screening for silent carriers at schools/colleges, before marriage and during pregnancy.
Considering the cost implications of the management and the magnitude of the impact of hemoglobinopathies on the socioeconomic stature of our nation… of course, crucial restrictive measures were needed to be undertaken swiftly.
With the help of experts, the Ministry of health and family welfare has developed comprehensive guidelines on hemoglobinopathies in India which is an integrated effort to provide not only a better future to the affected patients but also to prevent the birth of children with such genetic disorder, thereby aiming to reduce the number of children affected in our country.
